EYELASH EXTENSIONS: BASICS AND TECHNIQUES

WHAT ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Eyelash extensions are not for everyone. This beauty treatment requires time and gentle care for the lashes to remain in good condition and be long-lasting. Lash extensions are individual synthetic eyelashes that are glued to your natural lashes — not to the skin. This service is beauty enhancing and eliminates the need to wear mascara. It is a meticulous service which requires the skill and precision of a certified lash technician. All EYE LUSH, all staff are certified with multiple certifications, teaching, and experiences. We are all state-licensed beauticians.

At EYE LUSH, we use two main lash extension techniques of applying lash extensions that are safer and healthier for your natural lashes. For a classic set, lash extensions are attached one-by-one to each individual natural eyelash. For a volume set (also known as a Russian volume set or a 3D set), they can be 2-6 extremely lightweight lashes, customized into a fan, and then glued onto one natural eyelash. Similarly, for a mega volume set, the customized fans consist of 6-12 lashes. For a hybrid set, we use a mixture of both classic lash and volume lash extension techniques.

To learn more about each lash extension technique, please click to read below. To see the difference between each technique, please check out the gallery in Our Work.

WHAT ARE CLASSIC SET LASH EXTENSIONS?

Classic set lashes are applied one at a time at a 1:1 ratio with your natural lashes, leaving your lashes looking naturally gorgeous. It is a technique of skillfully applying one single synthetic eyelash extension to one isolated natural lash; this means for every natural lash you have, there will be one extension on it. Classic set lashes are the original lash extension technique, and lives up to its name. This is the best option for clients with full lashes who want to elevate and enhance their already thick natural lashes.

For our classic set lashes extensions, we offer two different services that you can book: Classic – Light (60-70% coverage of your natural lashes) and Classic – Deluxe (80-100% coverage of your natural lashes).

WHAT ARE VOLUME SET LASH EXTENSIONS?

The volume set lash extension technique is also known as the Russian volume lash extension technique. It is a meticulous technique of applying 2-6 very fine, lightweight extensions per natural lash, using thinner extensions to be able to apply multiple lash strands on one natural lash. As a result, Russian volume lashes are lighter than ordinary classic lashes. Aside from its look, there are many benefits volume lashes have over classic lashes. The most important reasons are that they are healthier for clients with fine and thin lashes and have longer retention.

Depending on the quality of the natural lash and the design clients requesting, we use a variety of synthetic lash diameters from 0.03mm-0.10mm. Depending on a volume set, artists will group two or more of the lash extension in a fan, dip the base in lash glue and carefully wrap the fan onto one natural lash. Russian lashes give the appearance that many lashes are growing from the one lash, compared to the 1:1 ratio with classic set lashes.

At EYE LUSH, we divide the volume lashes into three categories depending on the level of volume and coverage that a client desires: Volume – Light (60-70% coverage), Volume – Full (80-100% coverage), and Mega Volume (100% coverage).

WHAT ARE HYBRID SET LASH EXTENSIONS?

Hybrid lash extensions are a mixture of classic and volume techniques. Artists will apply 50% classic lashes and 50% volume lashes. This set is ideal for clients that want to experience both sets of lashes, or see the difference in wearing both lashes at once. It is also recommended for clients who want to transition from classic lashes to volume lashes.

At EYE LUSH, you can book our HYBRID – FULL service for 80-90% coverage of your natural lashes.

WHAT LASH DESIGN IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Every eye shape is as unique as our clients. We work with our clients to customize a design that fits their lifestyle and enhances their beauty and include a free consultation on style, curve, length, and design. EYE LUSH’s lashes come in 10 different lengths (6-15mm), 7 different thickness (0.03-0.18mm), and 5 different curvatures (J, B, C, D, L). We combine these variables to create any design fitting for round eyes, almond eyes, hooded eyes, Asian eyes, protruding eye, etc. Clients can bring their own designs or we can recommend a design that would complement their features, lifestyle, and lash health.

WHAT ARE LASH EXTENSIONS MADE OF?

Lash extensions come in different types of materials. At EYE LUSH, we only carry synthetic lashes. We don’t believe in using real mink or any animal products as we are against animal cruelty; authentic mink fur is also generally expensive, does not hold its curl, and has unreliable variation in sizes. Importantly, using synthetic lashes reduces the chance of developing an allergy.

At EYE LUSH, our lashes are made of PBT monofilament with a mink texture manufactured from Hylon Corporation, South Korea. The company is the first and well-known for producing the best and high-quality materials for lash extensions. Because our interest is to protect your natural lashes, we do not use any lash diameter size that is greater than 0.15mm.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS: APPOINTMENTS AND CARE

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE MY EYELASH EXTENSION APPOINTMENT?

Remove all eye makeup and clean your lashes with mild oil-free cleanser. Do not put on any mascara prior to your appointment. The cleaner your lashes, the less time we need to clean and more time to apply new extensions.

WHAT DOES THE LASH SESSION CONSIST OF?

We consult on a lash design if you are a new client, then we clean your lashes, remove grown out extensions, and add new extensions.  Each session is accompanied with a specific duration.  After a few sessions, you will get to know when is the right to come back for a refill as well as which refill to book.

IS THE LASH APPLICATION PAINFUL?

Not at all! The entire procedure is very comfortable and relaxing. Most clients fall asleep during the session. You can bring a set of headphones to listen to your favorite music or podcast on your phone! We recommend putting your phone on silent and letting your artist know if you are expecting a call to minimize disruption during the procedure.

WHAT IS A GOOD LASH JOB VS. A BAD LASH JOB?

Good lash job:

  • Can brush through.
  • No evidence of glue.
  • Lashes are properly isolated with a ratio of 1 natural lash to 1-12 extensions depending on the strength and health of the lash.
  • Should be light and feel like you are not wearing lashes.
  • There is a coherent lash design customized to your eye shape and lifestyle.

Bad lash job

  • Lashes pointing in different directions.
  • Heavy, itchy, painful.
  • Extensions are glued on multiple natural lashes.
  • Too much glue, you can see the glue, and you can’t brush through.
  • Extensions and natural lashes fall out in clumps.
HOW LONG WILL MY SINGLE-STRAND EYELASH EXTENSIONS LAST IF I FOLLOW THE PROPER CARE INSTRUCTIONS?

In some cases, eyelash extensions can last up to 8 weeks. However, it is common to get a touch up after 2-4 weeks to maintain a full and thick lash set. Like all hair, there are 3 phases to the eyelash growth cycle. Your eyelash cycle is 4-12 weeks.   Please don’t be alarmed if your lashes fall out quickly because they are mostly likely at the end of their cycle. Lifestyle, health, and types of medications clients are taking may also affect how long your lashes last. The majority of extensions will stay through a complete cycle if you follow EYE LUSH’s after care guidelines. At refills, we generally take out the old extensions on the lashes that have already grown out.  This process is time consuming; however, it prevents extensions from sagging, twisting and changing from the intended design.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A LASH SHOULD LOOSEN OR BECOME DISLODGED?

Do not pull on the lash. Please contact us to make an appointment to have them removed or replaced, in order to avoid damage to your natural lash. As your natural lashes fall out due to the growth cycle, you will need refills when your new lashes grow in.

DO LASH EXTENSIONS DAMAGE MY NATURAL EYELASHES?

If applied correctly, they should not damage your natural lashes. Lash extension(s) is adhered to one single natural lash, which will grow out naturally as your own lashes mature. The eyelash adhesive is formulated to create a solid bond, specifically for human lashes. The adhesive dries very soft on the lashes, allowing the lashes to stay flexible and bouncy just like your own lashes.  We will recommend the lash thickness or number of fans that are healthy for your lashes.

DO I NEED TO TAKE A BREAK FROM LASH EXTENSIONS?

If you follow EYE LUSH’s aftercare instructions, you shouldn’t need to take a break from getting refills.  We recommend clients getting a new set only if their lashes are coated with debris from make-up, dead skin, etc.  If their natural lashes are generally thin and sparse, we recommend using a lash serum while wearing extensions.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY EXTENSIONS?

For the first 24-48 hours:
1. Do not allow lashes to get wet or be exposed to extreme moisture. Do not swim during the curing time.
2. First 2 days: Avoid hot showers, saunas or cooking in a steamy kitchen. Steam will affect the glue, stopping it from bonding properly. Avoid being near heat, even a lighter.
3. Do not rub, perm, or tint lashes before or after lash extension application.
4. Do not pull or rub your lash extensions–as you are likely to pull out your natural lash with it.
5. Do not use mascara on your volume lashes. You can use mascara on classic lashes. If you must use mascara, avoid putting mascara at the base of the extensions. Never wear water-proof mascara, asretention will suffer and if present during refill it will be the cause of a weak bond.
6. Do not try to remove the extensions on your own. Do not cut your extensions–you risk cutting your natural lashes. Set up an appointment, if you need to remove your extensions.
7. Avoid oil-based make-up/products around the eyes. Oil breaks down the adhesive and cause lashes to slip off. Use oil-free make-up and make-up removals, especially before coming for a fill.
8. Avoid sleeping face-down on lashes.
9. Limit use of gel and liquid eyeliner. The ingredients will ruin the bond of your lashes. Protect your investment. Powder liner is recommended.
10. If you exercise, wash your extensions straight after the gym session.
11. Come back regularly for in fills (3-4 weeks is best, unless advised differently.) Always start your appointment with squeaky clean eyelashes. Makeup residue will only act as a guard and prevent the glue from adhering properly. Over time, if you are not able to keep your lashes free from residues, we recommend starting a brand new set after 5-6 refills because of possible remaining dirt and adhesive attaching to the natural lashes. Your artists may make the recommendation if needed.

HOW DO I WASH MY EXTENSIONS?

Important!! After at least 24-48 hour waiting period, you can clean your lashes daily, especially if you regularly wear make-up.

  • Do not rub your eyes or lashes when washing your face.
  • Clean around the eyes with a wash cloth, cotton pads or eye pads. Use fingertips, micro tip swabs, or silicone round/wedges (no cotton) to apply a foaming lash shampoo to the lashes using gentle, upward strokes and rinse well with tepid water.
  • Carefully dab off excess water with a towel or paper towel.
  • Fan or blow dry your lashes in cool settings.
  • Brush lashes as needed. Don’t brush while wet. Wait until dry then brush.
  • Your lashes are like hair. Keeping them clean will prevent infection. Dirt, dead skin cells and oil buildup can accumulate and clog up your pores, leaving your natural lashes, weak, thin, and fall off prematurely.

Remember: you are the boss of your gorgeous healthy lashes!

I'M A NEW CLIENT. CAN I GET A LASH REFILL?

If you are coming to us from another lash artist and need a refill, we may recommend lash extension removal. We will not refill if your lashes:

  • Are pointing in different directions.
  • Are too thick or damaging to your natural lashes.
  • Have significant growth from the lash base.
  • Have too much glue.
  • Are glued together. Your natural lashes should be isolated.
  • Have less than 40% of the extensions left.
  • Are too thick or damaging to your natural lashes.

Please be conscious of the time involved in getting a new set and a removal.  We strongly suggest that you do not remove lashes yourself so you do not damage your natural lashes. The more natural lashes you have, the more extensions we can apply.

  • Removal is $60.
  • Removal is $30 if it is accompanied with a new lash set.
  • Removal for current EYE LUSH clients is free.
